In order to treat a cargo correctly it is vital to know what parameters need to be cured. What is the goal? The first step is to draw representative samples of the cargo to be treated and assess the starting point. We are then able to find out if and how we can achieve the required specification. This step is vital if we are to fulfil all expectations. Once we have established the starting point and have agreed on treatment levels then we are ready to proceed with the treatment. Laroute treats in one of 3 ways:
In Line Once the treatment rates are established then we inject the additives in line during the loading operation. This method of treatment ensures a full and correct mixing with the cargo during loading. We need to be sure that the additive is mixed with the entire cargo throughout the loading; this ensures that each and every tank on the vessel is within the guaranteed specification. This route is reliable and minimises the risk of failure. Health and Safety compliance is an important requirement when treating in line. Laroute equipment and personnel must be approved; this requires local and terminal authorities inspection. This safety check relates to all equipment used. In Tank This type of treatment allows a shore tank to be blended and treated before the cargo is loaded and therefore changes ownership. The circumstances of treating in tank are similar to those of treating in line. Normally in tank treatment is done by injectng in line, whilst circulating from one tank to another. Health and Safety compliance is again paramount when treating within the confines of a terminal. On board vessel Treating on the vessel can essentially be carried out in two ways; in line at the manifold or via the deck of the ship into the cargo tanks. In line via the manifold is safe, secure and works well - see above. Treatment via the deck of the ship is possible but is not the most effective way to treat, as the additive is not fully mixed with the cargo. From experience, we know that if the vessel is beginning its voyage, then the rolling and movement of the vessel can help to homogenise the cargo during it passage. This method is commonly used if treatment is required once the vessel has sailed from its loadport. The rules and procedures of treatment on vessels are becoming stricter. Laroute operates on board tankers using the closed system for injecting additives. This method of operation is approved by the major oil companies and is fully endorsed by BP Shipping. The difficulty in this type of treatment is to know what we are trying to achieve from what. We therefore need to be sure that we have a representative sample of the cargo on board - What is the starting point? Health and Safety compliance is very important and the owners must be satisfied that the method of treatment falls in line with the vessel?s operational procedures. Equipment In order to service the 28 port operations Laroute owns a large amount of transportation and injection equipment. We own:
